Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)

In most cases, patients will be quoted approximately 10% chance of success per IUI (remember, each case is individualized so make sure you speak with your physician about your individual case). Did you know it was that low? This is why most REI’s will offer 3-4 cycles of IUI before moving on to the next treatment plan.

How does IUI work?

The IUI procedure is very much like a pap smear. IUI stands for intrauterine insemination. After the sperm has been washed and processed it is placed in a syringe connected to a very tiny catheter. If you are having an IUI, you will be brought into an exam room and asked to undress from the waist down. The provider will then insert a speculum, just like when you have your pap’s. The catheter is then inserted through the cervix and the sperm sample deposited in the uterus. The whole process should take approximately 10-15 minutes.

Typically, there are no restrictions after an IUI, but be sure to check with your doctor for their specific guidelines.
