The Vaginal Ultrasound. If you are an infertility patient, you will become very veeerrry familiar with the vaginal ultrasound. It is typically performed during the testing stage to assess your uterus and your ovaries. Specifically in the ovaries, we are looking for the number of follicles present (antral follicles or AFC for short) and the ovarian volumes (the amount of tissue present). If you are a patient of mine, you know all about the chocolate chip cookie. This exam is typically performed on your menses (yes, we know you will be bleeding) as this is when the ovaries are the “most quiet” for assessment.
